Classes and Workshops

New Trail Overseers are encouraged to attend a workshop or two, during their first season "on the job." The PATC-sponsord overseer workshops typically get high marks from new volunteers. Overseers can also hone their skills by working with other volunteers, by joining a work crew for a day or a weekend.

Experienced volunteers can find many opportunities to learn new trail skills, including rigging techniques, rock wall construction, and crosscut care. Chain saw safety training is a prerequisite for the use of that tool in Shenandoah National Park (and any PATC-maintained trail). All trail workers, and crew leaders in particular, should seek First Aid and CPR certification.
