Work Trip Information

Blue and White Crew trips are scheduled throughout the year, with weekend trips (overnight trips) scheduled from March through November. Overnight accommodations are provided, and meals (Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast) are usually planned as pot-lucks, with crew members each providing a dish. Overnight venues, project descriptions, meeting places/times, and pot-luck contributions are listed each month on the crew calendar.

New members are always welcome on crew trips. Trail work trips can be very strenous, with occasional long hikes to the work site, so prospective participants should be in good health. Because the crew works with tools and techniques that may be dangerous (chain saws, rigging apparatus, etc.), children are generally discouraged on crew trips.

Work trip participants should bring a day pack with enough water for a long day of strenuous exercise (2 to 3 liters, at a mininum), sturdy boots, lunch (for both days, if appropriate), work gloves, and rain gear. Volunteers who plan to stay overnight should bring camping gear (sleeping bag, pad, and tent, depending on the venue) and personal supplies. Crew members who enjoy beer or wine should plan on bringing their choice of beverage.

All necessary tools are provided by the crew, but participants are free to bring their own tools if they prefer (chain saw use is restricted to volunteers who have completed the NPS-FS-ATC certification course and are carrying a current certification card). No previous trail maintenance experience is required in order to participate in crew trips, and volunteers are free to work at their own pace.
